Spain vs. Argentina: The 2026 FIFA World Cup Final Kicks Off Today at MetLife

Today, July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Spain and Argentina meet in the FIFA World Cup final. Kickoff is 3:00 PM ET on FOX and Telemundo. It is the first World Cup final with a halftime show, the first ever played with 48 teams, and for much of the world watching, the most anticipated match in the tournament's 96-year history.

How both teams got here

Spain beat France 2-0 in the first semifinal at AT&T Stadium near Dallas on July 14. Rodri, the reigning Ballon d'Or winner, was instrumental in controlling the match through midfield, while Lamine Yamal provided two assists in a tournament that has made the 17-year-old one of the most talked-about players on the planet.

Argentina's path was harder. Defending world champions coming into the tournament, they fell behind England 1-0 in Atlanta in the second semifinal, then scored twice in the final minutes. Lautaro Martinez's header in the 92nd minute sent Argentina through 2-1. Lionel Messi, who set up both goals, has scored eight times in this tournament and has described this as his last World Cup.

This is the first time the reigning European champions and the reigning world champions have met in a World Cup final. The two sides were scheduled to face each other in a Finalissima in Qatar in March, but that match was cancelled because of the Iran war and the inability to secure an alternative venue. The MetLife final replaces it.

The numbers behind the tournament

The expanded 48-team format produced 104 matches across 16 venues from June 11 through today. More than 43 million viewers in the United States alone watched the round-of-32 match between the U.S. and Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 2, placing this World Cup alongside the NFL in American broadcast history. Some estimates suggest the global audience for the final could reach 1.5 billion viewers.

All three host nations, the USA, Mexico, and Canada, were eliminated in the round of 16. The USMNT lost to Belgium 4-1. Mexico fell to England. Canada lost to Morocco. That outcome generated debate at home, but attendance and viewership have broken records regardless.

What to watch in the match

Spain's game plan will likely center on possession and pressing through midfield. Argentina will try to absorb pressure and hit on the counter, with Messi pulling strings behind Lautaro Martinez and Julian Alvarez. When Messi is involved and Argentina trails late, they have shown they can find a way back. England found that out in Atlanta.

On the other side, Yamal has been the tournament's breakout performer. Four assists in the knockout rounds, a goal in the semifinal, and the kind of pace and dribbling that experienced international defenders have struggled to handle consistently.

The halftime show

FIFA is staging a halftime show for the first time in World Cup history. Madonna, Shakira, and BTS headline the 11-minute performance, curated by Chris Martin of Coldplay, with Justin Bieber, Burna Boy, and Gustavo Dudamel also appearing. The show aims to raise $100 million for the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund. Soccer commentators have criticized the decision as an unwelcome import from American sports culture, but FIFA has noted that previous halftime shows for major FIFA tournaments ran to 24 minutes without complaints from players or officials.

A note on venue history

MetLife Stadium hosts a World Cup final for the first time. The United States last hosted in 1994, and that final went to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Today is also the first World Cup final since 1930 where both finalists are Spanish-speaking nations. Extra time and penalties are available if the match is level after 90 minutes. A world champion is guaranteed by the end of the day.
